I was deployed out to Afghanistan back in 2002 and had a friend in my team who had recently passed his AFF. He didn't stop talking about it for 6 months and so I figured it must be worth a try. I passed my AFF in 2003 and haven't looked back since.
I always knew I wanted to go down the Freefly route. Watching some of the top guys like Mickey Carpenter and Andy Newell performing was enough to inspire me to work as hard as possible in the hope that I'd be able to fly alongside them one day. That work paid off. Now I just want to keep jumping and see where the sport takes me. Part of the attraction of skydiving is the freedom that you feel, not just in the air but also in the choices and opportunities that it presents you with.
For people just starting out in the sport I would say that the tunnel is an amazing place to learn and so I always recommend getting in as much time as you can spare (and afford). However, I'm also a strong believer that you should mix it with time in the sky on a regular basis too. Oh, and make sure you're having fun!
